Boothe Luce
How do you interpret the Clare Boothe Luce quotation "No good deed goes unpunished"?

do you often come unstuck when helping someone else? or do you think it means that you shouldn't think of helping people as a 'good deed' at all?

I had thought of this as the first, and the second had not occurred to me. It depends on whether they were controversially cynical for effect (a bit like Oscar Wilde or Ambrose Bierce, say) or whether they were making a deeper point about intention undermining apparently ethical actions.

Thanks for getting me thinking a bit deeper!
