Why was a "free press" specifically outlined in the First Amendment?
and what function does a free press play in re to public issues?
The Original Intent of the Founding Fathers that argued for the "Freedom of the Press" was so that an Unfettered and Uncensored Press would be the Eyes and Ears for the public against any wrongdoing by the Government. It would make the "Press" the 4th Check against the Government. It is unfortunate that today, the Mass Media Circuit has lost that meaning and has Politicized itself. It no longer serves as a check against Government Usurpation of the People's Power.
