Why is Barack Obama's Victory So Historic When This Has Happened In Other Countries?
Many other countries have had female leaders.
Obama's win is historic in for the US but why is the world calling it historic when like I said many other countries already have their first female leader.
I was watching the daily show, the guest was a fox newscaster and he said something like this could never happen anywhere in the world but this has happened maybe not a black man being voted in another country but a woman being voted. How is a woman being voted less historic?
I think many other countries view Obama's victory as historic because they are aware of our long history of racial problems. We are supposed to be a nation of freedom and equality for all, but 40 years ago the world watched the Civil Rights struggle in the South, and saw when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.
It's not any less historic when a woman is voted into the highest office in the land, and many other countries have passed that benchmark. Long before Maggie Thatcher was PM of England, Golda Meir was PM of Israel, and Indira Gandhi was PM of India. Some day, we, too, will have a woman in the highest seat of power, and that will be another historic moment for us.
Right now, we, a nation which still has a racial divide, have elected a black man to our highest elected office. Because of our position in the world, that arguably makes him the leader of the free world, or will once he takes office in January. That's a big deal for us, but it also says a lot to other countries who watch us.
I imagine a lot of them are thinking that we are finally growing up, and walking the walk instead of just talking the talk. We've always elected white males, and with very few exceptions, they've all been Protestant Christians. The fact that we elected a black man is a major milestone for us, and is, actually, quite a big deal when looked at in a certain light.
Luckily, they'll get over being awestruck, Americans who are awestruck will get over it, and then it won't be a big deal anymore. Obama will be judged just like any other president--on how well he does the job and leads the country.
