reasons why people should've voted for humphrey/muskie?
The election in 1968 was dominated by the US involvement in the Vietnam War, which was 99% due to the decisions of two Democrat Presidents, Kennedy and LBJ. It would have served the Democrats right to have to take responsibility for their own previous actions. LBJ really expanded the war, multiplying the negative consequences of American involvement. While is true that the Republicans supported the Democrats in Vietnam, it is also true that the last really conservative President of the USA, Eisenhower, could have made the mistakes of Kennedy and Johnson, but didn't. He also didn't give the go-ahead for the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Eisenhower supported the government of South Vietnam, but he was too cautious about getting involved in a land war in Asia to commit the USA to winning a war there (unlike Bush...and Obama). Nixon wanted to be President too much to avoid running in 1968---even though the winner was going to be left holding the bag. LBJ knew enough to bug out.
A more conservative level of support for South Vietnam would have been much more prudent. It would have been possible. Taking over the war from the South Vietnamese in the 1960s was a huge mistake. The Americans got so impatient with the South Vietnamese that they decided to fight their war for them. Then the Americans got tired of the war. If the USA had fought it more like the British would have, they would have economized their efforts, paced themselves and leaned on the South Vietnamese to do as much as possible. But Kennedy and LBJ were too full of confidence in themselves and in the USA.
Lee Kuan Yew said, in "From Third World to First", that the American stand in South Vietnam gave some needed time to the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia to build up their strength against native Communist movements. It is very possible. I am not condemning the anti-Communist containment effort of the Americans. I'm saying that Kennedy and LBJ weren't cautious enough in the way they executed that strategy in Vietnam, and that hurt a lot of people.
As it turned out, Nixon steadily withdrew troops from Vietnam over his first term, and somehow got stuck with the lion's share of the blame for the American participation in the war.
