Can you tell me at least 2 or more fun facts about president Herbert Hoover?
Hoover really had a great life before he became president. He was a student in the very first year of Stanford University. In fact he claimed to be the first student there, because he was the first to sleep in a dormitory there. He got a degree as a mining engineer, then he went to Australia where he invented a process for getting zinc out of mine tailings that made a lot of money and put a lot of people to work. Then he went to China to work on a mine there and there was a revolution (The Boxer Rebellion) and his town was under siege for a month, and he risked his life to save Chinese children, and probably saved many lives. Back home, when WWI started, Hoover led a volunteer force that passed out food and clothing in Belgium, which grew to a huge effort. He crossed the Atlantic 40 times during WWII to talk to German officials to try to persuade them to allow more aid into Belgium.
Then, when the US joined WWI, President Wilson put Hoover in charge of the American Food Administration, to try to encourage Americans to take meatless days and wheatless days, and 'When in doubt, eat potatoes'. Then he formed the American Friends Service Committee (a Quaker organization--did I mention he was a Quaker?) which still does war relief work today all over the world.
All in all he probably saved thousands of lives before getting into politics! Of course, he became president in the closing years of the post-war boom and presided over the Stock Market Crash of 1929, and the beginning of the Depression. 8^<
