The Spanish Civil War is widely recognised as having been a dress-rehearsal for the Second World War in Europe, at least as far as the Nazis and fascists were concerned. The problem was that Britain and France did not support the progressive Spanish government when it was attacked by Franco and his falangists, but remained neutral. This gave Hitler's regime the chance to try out new military techniques such as aerial bombing against civilians, which were later put to great effect in the conquest of Poland.
The US and its western allies made a similar mistake when they supported the wrong side in Afghanistan between 1978 and 1992. They should have supported the then progressive Afghan government like the Soviet Union did, and today's problems of Islamic fundamentalist terrorism would not have arisen.
