What are Ford's and Carter's "high interest rates"?
I'm reading my U.S. History textbook and it said that Gerald Ford supported high interest rates and Jimmy Carter appointed conservative economists who ensured a policy of high interest rates.
So what exactly are high interest rates? Are they the interest rates we pay for our houses/cars/other luxuries/etc.? Or is this some type of interest dealing with something else like international trade or something I would just not think of?
And if it's the regular high interest rates that we pay...why are they supporting high interest rates?
During the 1970's we had high inflation due to sudden increases in oil prices in 1974 and again in 1979, This produced inflation and high interest rates for everything because people will not lend if the net return when they are repaid is worth less than the original loan. To combat inflation the fed increased the fed funds rate, which is the rate which is the rate banks pay when they borrow, which made the interest rate people paid even higher. High interest rate makes it costly to borrow so people buy less, which reduces demand so prices fall or at least stop growing so fast. Here ia a graph of the fed funds rates for that period.

As you can see the problems continued well into the 1980's ( the gray areas are recessions.
