How did the USPS responded to the 2001 Anthrax attack? (comm. project)?

What did they say to the media? key audience?
intended messages? was there a crisis plan?
WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE? lessons learned?
-what should have be done, that wasnt?

You've asked a very complicated question and perhaps you should do some research to answer it. I'll give you a couple of basics from my viewpoint.

Remember, the 2001 anthrax attack was occurring within weeks before and after 9/11/2001. The focus of most of the country was not on anthrax after that happened. Perhaps the USPS did not have the specialists available under the crisis to make the best judgement.

PM Jack Potter addressed the employees of the USPS and the Nation to tell them the mail was safe. As I recall he said" experts have assured me that anthrax spores cannot escape a sealed envelope" . Within two days two employees of the Brentwood facility (Washington DC) were dead. The facility was later renamed Curseen-Morris in honor of the two after a massive clean-up.

There were crisis plans in place, but did not address unforeseen dangers. We has plans for fire, floods etc. but none for chemical/biological attacks.

The USPS provided face masks and surgical gloves to all workers and many of them used them but no one knew if they would provide protection.

Since that time we have SOPS on dealing with suspicious substances and a highly regulated program to deal with acceptance of items over 13 ounces (Uni bomber). There are also machines which can detect anthrax which some mail is screened, but the details of those is of a security nature which we, the average employee is not privy to.
